The ongoing enterprise-wide transition from legacy WAN to software-defined networking (SDN) infrastructure has given birth to a host of UCaaS, SaaS, and other cloud-based applications. However, SMBs and smaller organizations that can’t afford expensive SDN and SD-WAN solutions are unable to enhance their operations and leverage the endless benefits of cloud-based software.
To such organizations, Network as a service (NaaS) is an effective business model. By availing a NaaS from a proven SDN service provider, organizations can enjoy enterprise-wide area network services virtually on a subscription basis. In what’s largely a plug & play service model that requires marginal capital investment and alteration of existing processes, enterprises can seamlessly switch into a new networking infrastructure. After all, operating and configuring routers and protocols, WAN optimizers, and other components such as software-defined-WAN endpoints, and firewalls, is extremely complicated. With a robust NaaS, those responsibilities are completely handled by a third-party service provider and then made available to customers.
SDN service providers have also proven to be very flexible in their offerings. For example, businesses that can’t afford the entire service model can avail of just a few services, which could include optimization, firewall, or other security features. In fact, several SDN service providers offer a single NaaS for a flat fee and include other services as part of a complete package. Some NaaS providers are known to specialize in certain areas such as ultra-simple configuration, ultra-secure connectivity, or just providing services to temporary locations, especially data centers in remote locations.
While SMBs are still the primary target audience for NaaS providers, a number of large enterprises are also adopting the business model in recent years. NaaS can be particularly appealing to startups due to the significant reduction of capital investment expense for network hardware.
NaaS has also proven to reduce the amount of staff time required to maintain the network infrastructure, thereby reducing the level of training and skill required of the IT/Network team. In some ways, NaaS essentially becomes another utility that organizations pay for, comparable to electricity, heat, or water. Another significant value-add of the NaaS business model is that the IT staff of an organization can maintain its network through a portal rather than a complex patchwork of network management tools and stacks of hardware. By leveraging NaaS, enterprises can add new branch offices to the organization’s WAN by simply connecting it to the NaaS provider’s nearest point-of-presence (POP). This can be done either through a leased line to a nearby data center or over the internet.
