NEC Corporation: Accelerating New Growth In SDN

Follow NEC Corporation on :

Takashi Niino, President & CEO, NEC CorporationTakashi Niino, President & CEO
In a highly competitive digital economy, enterprises are rapidly moving their applications and services to the cloud to benefit from increased productivity, improved economics and a faster response to their market needs. They are becoming digital enterprises with high expectations for on-demand, secure and easy-to-access services that enable a sense of empowerment to drive business success. The problem is that network connectivity is not keeping up with the speed, bandwidth and flexibility demands of the digital era.

Service providers have a tremendous opportunity to become strategic partners to their enterprise customers, not only providing the next generation of connectivity, such as SD-WAN and cloud CPE, but also delivering the high-value applications and services their customers need. The only way to do this is by transforming to a cloud model with SDN/NFV. With cloud technology, service providers can connect branch offices faster, deliver cloud applications with the bandwidth and performance needed and make speedy service modifications.

However, building and launching virtualized and cloud services involve complex processes that are time-consuming and costly. Service providers need to undergo lengthy vendor selections; get their cloud platforms ready; become familiar with new technology; and test, validate and integrate the solutions with existing Basic Service Set (BSS)/ OSS infrastructure. And this cannot be achieved without reskilling the workforce, changing business processes and making significant upfront investments.

NEC has helped many service providers to fundamentally change how their business services are delivered and consumed, leveraging their award winning Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) solution to deliver cloud-based network connectivity bundled with value-added and IT/cloud services.

Innovative engagement model with NEC Business Cloud

NEC’s NaaS provides an end-to-end environment for service providers to rapidly create, deploy and monetize a broad scope of services by bringing together best-of-breed virtualized network services (vCPE, SD-WAN), value-added services (firewalls, WAN optimization) and cloud IT applications such as storage, productivity apps. NaaS is a full stack solution comprising VNF onboarding, service design, hybrid operations and a complete business environment including the Digital Marketplace.

NaaS is a full stack solution comprising VNF onboarding, service design, hybrid operations and a complete business environment including the Digital Marketplace

To facilitate this, the company has launched an Ecosystem 2.0 Program, using which they have already onboarded over 200 VNF/IT apps providing a wide choice of services to start from. The company’s solution uses Agile/DevOps practices and tools to speed up time to market. With this unique full stack solution approach, customers can get up and running 70 percent faster increase ARPU up to 25 percent and reduce churn up to 30 percent. With NEC Business Cloud, service providers now have an alternative to building and running their own cloud. NEC can get customers to market eight times faster, with highly differentiated services that will enable customers to capture a greater share of the high-value B2B market.

With NEC Business Cloud, they eliminate service providers’ time, cost and complexity barriers to cloud transformation by running the industry’s first full-stack SDN/ NFV solution—from VNFs to orchestration, BSS, OSS, portals and a digital marketplace—as a service. Using NEC’s cloud, or a multi-cloud environment together with the service provider’s own cloud and public cloud, the company takes full end-to-end responsibility for the entire suite of services.

NEC Business Cloud has a broad range of service packages that are ready to go, leveraging an extensive set of pre-integrated VNF and cloud partners from our award-winning Ecosystem 2.0 program. By bundling cloud connectivity services, such as SD-WAN, with value-added network services, enterprise applications and IoT infrastructure applications, service providers can create and launch highly differentiated enterprise and vertical-specific offerings in just six weeks. New services and partner software are continuously added to NEC Business Cloud based on the service provider’s specific market needs.

NEC also provides an innovative engagement model integrated with Business Cloud solution that will mitigate the business risks of migrating to virtualization and cloud, enabling a focus on business growth. With NEC’s revenue-share models, such as pay-as-you-grow, service providers can start small and scale as the business takes off. NEC also offers extensive go-to-market support to get sales teams up and running with the right marketing content and the right mix of services.

NEC Business Cloud provides a global reach to support localization and is based on an advanced security framework that protects the network and service layers from cyber threats while keeping customer data secure.
Based on a modular, cloud-native stack and leveraging the broad Netcracker portfolio and experience, the solution can be easily expanded to add new capabilities and services at the pace of a service provider’s business.

Redefining Cloud-based Networking

The effectiveness of NEC’s cloud-based Networking solution can be best explained using a case study. TELUS selected NEC as a partner to bring its innovative Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) solution to the Canadian market. The solution helps TELUS deliver more agile, personalized and software-defined services and leverages existing BSS/OSS from NEC. Designing, expanding and managing the day-to-day operations of an enterprise network are often associated with high costs, long turnaround times and complex IT ecosystems. To address these challenges, TELUS introduced a NaaS solution, starting with SD-WAN and security services, as a means to simplify how employees connect, streamline data access and secure business networks. Ultimately, TELUS wanted to provide customers with a unique digital user experience through a game-changing solution that allows them to build and manage networks, as well as their associated services, on demand and with minimal complexity.

"NEC Business Cloud provides a global reach to support localization and is based on an advanced security framework that protects the network and service layers from cyber threats while keeping customer data secure"

As part of the first step of its NaaS transformation program, TELUS collaborated with Netcracker to introduce a unique SD-WAN service which used an existing BSS/OSS environment from Netcracker. The environment comprises of self-service portals for consumers and partners, as well as order management across the customer, product and service layers, covering the end-to-end order-to-activation process. Quickly launching the program was a crucial element for the success of the project, as building a whole new IT stack from scratch would be costly and time-consuming. Additionally, TELUS was already successfully using Netcracker’s Order-to-Activation platform to deliver next-gen services and enable a digital customer experience in the residential market.

In 2017, TELUS was recognized for its NaaS solution with a Telecom Review Excellence Award for “Most Innovative Product/Service for Operators.” The solution promises a reduction in total cost of ownership by up to 67 percent and 80 percent faster network service configuration.

Under the brand statement, "Orchestrating a brighter world," NEC Group is focusing on Solutions for Society businesses that utilize the strengths of ICT to create the social value of safety, security, efficiency and equality that is necessary for people to live more prosperous lives.
